WINE BARREL LOUNGE

vinechair.png

While working at Merriam Vineyards, I decided to make a wine barrel lounge from one of the barrels that had a leak in it and could no longer be used in production. I had seen a similar type lounge in town and just wanted to re-create a similar one. I though it was brilliant in how it took convex side of the stave for the bottom of the lounge and the concave side of the stave for the back, supporting the human body in a natural way. I learned how tricky it was to work with wood of that shape as nothing perfectly fits together.

Everything except the middle support of the bottom is made from staves, while the middle support is reclaimed wood from the vineyard. Once I notched in and laid the structure, I placed staves across. Each has a different width and varied the rhythm to seem fluid and natural. I then cut off the ends to create a more uniform shape as the full staves did not line up exactly. Lastly I added arm rests, a great addition to allow for full relaxation after a long day on the crush pad.

I took the top to that barrel and made a rotating whiskey table for my mother. I wood-burned her name and birthday in by hand and stained the top to bring out the texture of the wood.
