STUDIO VI : CLASSICAL SHOTGUN HOUSE
SPRING 2021 INTRUCTOR : KIETH LOFTIN
All graphics were created digitally, yet made to feel as if they were made by hand. This "digital hand drawing" aesthetic helps to breath life into computer made graphics. It gives the drawings texture and personality, two adjectives one might think of to describe the expressive shotgun houses of working class people on many streets in New Orleans. Initially inspired by classical Beaux Arts drawings, this graphic style speaks to the shotgun house itself, a rugged yet expressive house, each with its own character and story.
The design is for a New Orleans couple, who greatly admire the essence of Shotgun Houses. This one-story new build is in the Garden District, which flowers with colorful shotgun houses throughout it's streets. The design greatly respects the context of the neighborhood drawing from the classical Greek Revival language around it. It's two key aspects are the ADA ramp (needed for the client) and the continuous entablature, which are both united into a cohesive whole. This contrasts the traditional style of the Greek Revival porches, where the entablature abruptly stops, feeling as if it is tacked on. Each element of this house, from gutters to window sills to the ramp, were carefully considered to integrate together.
