ECOFAB FURNITURE DESIGN FROM SALVAGE + WASTE

FALL 2020        INTRUCTOR : JULEE HERDT

EcoFab is  a  green-build  course  in  which  students  create  beautiful  eco-furniture,  architecture  elements, clothing, a product prototype, and other unique functional art item(s) of their own design. Salvage, recycled and  found  objects,  material  scraps  and  surplus, bits  and  pieces,  vintage  refuse,  the  most  humble,  the abandoned and derelict, the unwanted objects that people throw away, are carefully studied as sources for inspiration to create most beautiful new designs”.

The materials used were forgotten. They were found in dumpsters and 5 dollar scrap piles, places where they are thought to be relatively unusable. The steel had rugged irregular edges, the wood was chipped and split. These material “flaws” were embraced during the design process. The final design looks have if the materials have fallen into balance.
