Pavillion in the prairie
STUDIO III : PAVILION
FALL 2019 INTRUCTOR : CYNTHIA FISHMAN
The Pavilion is located in the Baseline Development, which is redefining what it means to live in suburbia. The pavilion was meant to embody that new philosophy. To redefine our relationship with the material and natural worlds. To look more deeply into the process that makes the products and materials that surround us.
The design starts to blend those conceptions. The program is dedicated to the process behind making ice cream, one that is often forgotten and far removed. It attempts to bring the viewer closer to the source of products such as ice cream. To blur the lines between the prairie field and the ice cream scoop. The pavilion becomes a trans-formative gateway from the city to the prairie. It filters people through while falling gracefully down into the prairie. Redefining our relationship to nature in a more connective and holistic view, one without boundaries and boxes.
The structure itself is meant to enhance the experience of the program. It too blends the meaning between products and natural resources. The facade blends the prairies ecosystem into the thatch roof by using the natural qualities and functions of each.
MORPHOLOGY & CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
Prairie grass can grow naturally on slopes up to 25º, but with aid of soil retention technology it can go up to 45º in slope.

Denver has a dry climate, which is good for thatch. The material is most effective from 90º to 45º, to wick water. It can still be used on lower grades, but it may reduce the life expectancy of the material.

SITE PLAN
The causeway from the urban core filters people from the streets and toward the pavilion. The two small buildings are more structural with overhanging roofs that used in hay storage structures. They serve to connect the urban core to the pavilion. Their design compliments the pavilion but does not take away form the intensity of it.
