DU MASTER PLAN BID
AYER SAINT GROSS - INTERNSHIP 2017
I worked with Ayer Saint Gross and helped them present for their University of Denver Master Plan bid. I was involved in identifying key aspects of campus that should be prioritized in the bid presentation. As well as assessing the role that the campus could play in the greater Denver area. During this time I modeled and 3D-printed a scale model of the entire campus from google maps and site photos, which was used during the presentation to help visualize and engage members of the campus. This was done on my roommate's 3D printer as ASG was based in Baltimore.
After winning the bid presentation I continued to be apart of numerous department meetings. We began to identify which departments were lacking space and resources, and which departments had an excess. This involved intensive spacial analytic research of every room on campus and it uses at specific times. This research helped identify where departments could potentially share resources as well as the future developments on campus that would be needed.
Using the model to facilitate productive conversations with the University and the local community
How can we improve Du into a more vibrant neighborhood of the greater Denver area?
The campus is a beautiful oasis filled with rich spaces and stimulating architecture. Yet the campus's rough edges hinder its ability to create inviting retial for non-college students. Thus many vendors around the area have trouble survivng.
EDGES
Baseline Conditions of Campus
Lack of signage and sense of arrival on campus
Many people's first sight of campus (Butchtel and University) with no real feeling of entering campus
Potential Improvements
Adding landmarks, softening edges, creating a sense of arrival or gateway
Wide heavily trafficked roads create harsh campus edges
Vendors on University Blvd.
Vegetative buffers, bump-outs to slow traffic, widening sidewalks, more intricate paving than harsh concrete
I helped the team look at vibrant neighborhoods in Denver, so we could start to examine how to make DU a destination neighborhood. The campus struggles with drawing people outside the student body, which hinders economic opportunities for vendors and the campus.
DU has many harsh urban edges, which we identified and started to offer solutions to making these edges more inviting and vibrant.
